I was a student of Mr. Armes at Whitford Jr High in the early 70s. He was larger than life to this impossibly shy 8th grader. I had a so-so voice, but he let me in the choir anyway. One of my favorite memories was when we performed at Sunset High School. We sang Cherish and Hava Nagila. The acoustics at Sunset High were terrible. In the middle of singing Cherish we realized we couldn’t hear the piano. We continued to sing quietly and turned to listening to each other to get back in tune. We ended Cherish in full voice. Our last song was Hava Nagila. We performed it better than we ever had before. We received an enthusiastic standing ovation. In class, Mr. Armes said he realized we couldn’t hear the piano as everything fell apart. He thought he would have to stop us and start over. When we pulled things together by listening to each other, he said he had never been prouder of his students than he was that night. Nearly 50 yrs later, this memory still lives with me.

I was a student of Mr. Armes from 1970 to 1973 at Whitford Jr. High. He was a demanding teacher that had very high expectations of his students. Through his teaching I grew to love singing and our choir was very well known for it's excellence. Well into my forties I was singing carols at a holiday party with a group of friends. The woman turned to me during a break and said "you've had professional training?" I replied, "no just an amazing teacher years ago." Bravo Mr. Armes, Bravo!

I went to Whitford and accompanied the choir on piano under the direction of Romey Armes when I was in eighth grade. When I look back, the music he chose for a junior high choir rose to a high level, and he made the students reach a high level too. He was a huge influence for me as a musician and really taught me a lot about choir music. I remember all of the music like it was yesterday and that we recorded a record too. He was very talented. I was sad to read of his passing. Blessings to his family and friends.

Mr. Armes was the best choir director known to man!! The level of perfection that he was able to draw out of students, most without formal music training was astounding! His sometimes demanding and regimented method of instruction really paid off! What a blessing to have studied with him! Rest in peace! I'm sure he is directing the heavenly choir now!

I went to Whitford from 1973-1975. Mr. Armes was a progressive teacher who was dedicated to student learning and passionate about music. I am terribly sorry to learn of his passing and send my condolences to his family.
