Obituary of Norma Lucille Smoczyk

Norma Lucille Hagan Smoczyk 1927-2019 Norma Lucille Hagan Smoczyk, 92, passed away on Friday, October 25, 2019 in Milwaukie, Oregon where she spent the last four years of her life. Born in Seattle, Washington on September 23, 1927 Norma lived the first few years of her life in Silverdale, Washington. She was raised on “the ranch” in Crosby, Washington outside of Seabeck by her father Percy Dillingham Hagan and step-mother Jennie Druml Hagan. She was a 1944 graduate of Central Kitsap High School. During World War II and after, she worked in the Bremerton Naval Shipyard. In the late 1940’s, she met John “Jack” Wayne Smoczyk on a cruise to Alaska. Following their marriage on November 19, 1949, they set up home in south Seattle. Norma worked at the VA Hospital. Norma was loving, generous, devoted and outgoing. She was active with the Southeast Seattle Senior Center, Kubota Garden, Red Hatter group, St. Edward School, and volunteered as a Block Watch Captain. She loved gardening, camping, clam digging, knitting, traveling, crossword puzzles and a good martini. Surviving are son John Peter Smoczyk of San Juan Island, WA; daughters Jacqueline Rae Smoczyk Wrye (Danny) of Olympia, WA and Jeanene Bernert of Milwaukie, OR; grandchildren Nadine Crutchfield (Lance), Natalie Wrye, Celeste Wrye, Kelsey Coffrin (Seth), Sara Shepherd (Cody), and Jason Bernert; and great grandchildren Livia, Chloe and Theo; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death are husband John Wayne Smoczyk (1993), son Paul Michael Smoczyk (1978), parents Percy Dillingham Hagan and Martha Rose Kanthack Hunt, step-mother Jenny Druml Hagan, and brother Harold Arthur Hunt. Inurnment will be at Mountain View Cemetery (Auburn, WA) on Friday, Nov. 22 at 1:30. A memorial service and reception will follow at Best Western Plus Mountain View Auburn Inn. In lieu of flowers, remembrances could be made to the Southeast Seattle Senior Center.
