Obituary of Gregory Vance Holt
Gregory Vance Holt passed away peacefully at St. Vincent's Hospital in Portland Oregon at age 57 on Sept. 5, 2020 with his beloved wife, Jackie, by his side. Greg’s kind and gentle spirit was admired by all who knew him.
Born in Los Angeles, California to Joi and Earl Holt on September 12, 1962 he was predeceased in death by his dad, Earl. Greg is survived by his wife, Jackie, their two children Stephen (Samantha), and Ilyssa, his mother, Joi Oubre and brother Chris Oubre.
Greg attended St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Elementary School and Daniel Murphy Catholic High School in Los Angeles. An avid athlete, he received an athletic scholarship to play basketball at the University of Portland, graduating in 1985. While at UP, Greg met the love of his life Jackie Carino, and in 1989 they were married at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Portland. This past May, Greg and Jackie celebrated their 31st wedding anniversary.
After college, Greg worked in sales for IBM, XEROX and Johnson & Johnson Orthopedics before striking out on his own medical surgical sales distributorship. An entrepreneur at heart, Greg made a career change in 2007 and was the sole proprietor of Vance Oubre LLC, specializing in custom woodwork and decorative metal fabrication.
Family was the most important element in Greg’s life, and his home was open to everyone. Hosting family gatherings, as well as team dinners and celebrations for both Stephen and Ilyssa gave him and Jackie great joy. Greg coached his children in basketball, soccer, baseball and softball, and his commitment to Stephen and Ilyssa’s athletics was unmatched. Watching and traveling far distances to see his kids play collegiate and professional sports were some of his highlights. He never missed a game, even if that meant late nights or early mornings to align with international game schedules.
Greg continued his love of basketball, and played competitively with the Multnomah Athletic Club masters team until 2019. Greg was an active member of Jesuit High School, serving on the Parent Board, Diversity Committee, Communication Committee as well as a member of the Board of Trustees for 6 years.
Due to current 2020 Oregon Pandemic restrictions, extremely limited access was granted to the private funeral service held at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Beaverton on September 15, 2020. Greg was placed to rest at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Portland immediately following the services, with his loved ones in attendance.
