Greg used to call on my business, Artisan Orthotic-Prosthetic Technologies, back during the early 2000's. I lost contact with him around 2006-2007, when he changed jobs. I've been looking for him ever since. I had an old phone number that changed after he left J&J. Nevertheless, I have attempted to re-establish contact with him several times over the years. Why? Because he left that kind of impression on me. A quality guy dripping with ethics and all the things one looks for in a good friend or business associate. This past week, I thought again of Greg, and was determined to find him. I sat at the computer, putting his name in in different ways. I finally Googled, "Greg Holt University of Portland basketball." That is when his obituary came up. I am beyond disbelief. He always talked about his family. I helped him when his son needed a protective brace for his elbow, while playing baseball. I never heard him utter a disparaging word about anyone. One of the kindest, most thoughtful people I have ever met. It's hard to imagine that God had a better plan for Greg than the life he was leading here on earth, but that's part of the mystery of faith. I will pray for Greg, his family, and the growing list of friends lost to cancer. This was one special human being that we are all better people for having known. Godspeed Greg!

What a loss. Greg was a gentle giant, always kind and helpful, a huge heart to go with his bigger than life stature. Greg's son Stephen and my older son Josh were very close friends during their elementary school years. They played several years together on the Murrayhill Little League Baseball all star team. During those years we got to know Greg and grew very fond of Greg and the entire Holt family. We love the Holts and our hearts go out to them for their loss. Greg lived a full life and leaves an amazing legacy of family and friendships. May we all aspire to the level of human dignity and love that Greg so demonstrated. Rest in Peace brother.

I never got to see Greg play basketball, but I did get to play golf with him. I hope he was a better basketball player than golfer....However:
A couple years back, we were playing at the Tualatin country club and got to the par 3, 15th hole. It was fall and the trees cast a long shadow on the green. Greg stepped up and hit a beauty. It was tracking right to the hole and disappeared. Greg turned and in that raised voice of his, questioned "did that go in the hole?!" Yes it did! I remember being so happy for Greg who just took it all in stride.
I will miss you something terrible my friend. -- Tom Vonderach

Even though his life was cut short, I really believe he lived life to the fullest. I will miss all our conversations about basketball. I always used to tell him he would make a great coach because he knew so much about the game. He was always so patient with Jackie’s mom explaining everything from basketball to what a carbohydrate was!! In short, I will miss everything about him!! RIP Greg. I will miss you forever!

When I think of Greg, the first thing that comes to mind is not his sense of humor and quick wit, his woodworking creativity, or his preference for sweet potato pie and Jackie's cooking. What I will always remember was Greg making family his priority. My fondest memories are GH calling everyone to gather around to say grace before a meal, sitting at the head of the dinner table, spinning stories. And of course, Greg and Jackie partnering to raise the best kids ever! I've told many people recently that in all these years that we've been family I've never heard Greg talk badly of anyone. Talk about a role model!! RIP, brother Greg.. <ron carino>
