Sele- I admire your bravery. You fought like a hero you are. Life was so tough and so difficult. You fought till your last breath. This world was lonely, difficult and unbearable for you. It breaks my heart to believe you are gone. You thought me how to fight. Now I know how we all are alone when we close our doors behind us. I know you did all you could. You tried your best. Despite all the difficulties and barriers you accomplished a lot. You are a hero, you didn’t die in vein. You showed me how human and vulnerable I am. I love you little brother. I love you and I miss you. You live on forever.

So much of my memory of Sele is of when he was little because we were inseparable while growing up. We loved going on adventures, climbing trees, playing tetherball, talking about movies. We looked up to our older siblings and we wanted to be everything they were.
When he came to live here, Andy and I went to Seattle to pick him up. The whole ride back, he told us about what happened in his life, from when we last saw one another last.
A few years later, Sele was diagnosed with mental illness and diabetes. He also struggled with substance use.
I am telling you this because it is part of his life story and because I hope it will help you understand him a little bit more. Sele was more than the diseases I just mentioned. He was a loving and caring person that wanted to connect with people and enjoy life to the fullest. He was
so hard working and one of the most resourceful people I know.
While battling his illness, Sele earned his GED, went to vocational school and mastered a trade. He continued to learn new skills and worked all kinds of jobs.
I asked myself “what would he like me to say at his funeral?”. He would want me to be honest with you all. He would also want me to tell you that he tried his best.
He would like us to know that despite being ill and feeling all alone all the time, he worked hard to maintain his friendships the best he could. He studied new skills, held jobs, had dreams for the future. He loved his family greatly and wanted to be a provider.
He fought hard until his last breath. But This kind of fight cannot be fought alone, this kind of fight requires all of us.
I won't stand here today and lie to you that i didn't think this day will come. But I never wanted to believe it and I'm struggling to believe it even now. I never prepared myself for it.
The disease took Sele from us long before death did. Our mourning has been prolonged and has now soured. We mourn dreams that weren't realized, healing we prayed for and did not receive, and the loss of a chance to try again and again and again.
I will leave you with these words:
Depression will tell you that you are not worthy of care, that the world is a better place without you. This is not true. You are worthy of care and love and the world is made much more beautiful with you in it.
In the words of Ursula Le Guin,
“There's really only one question that can be answered...and we already know the answer. ... The only thing that makes life possible is permanent, intolerable uncertainty: not knowing what comes next.”
