Obituary of Dennis Paul Daut
Dr. Dennis P. Daut, loving husband, father and grandfather, died at his home in Lake Oswego, Ore., on Thursday, March 1, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife, Cheryl; two daughters, Virginia and Elizabeth Daut; and three grandchildren. His two sisters, Barbara Balen (husband Robert) and Christine Niedzwiecki (husband Jerry), also survive; his older brother, Dr. Donald W. Daut, died in 2010. Dennis was preceded in death by his mother, Christine Carmella Manock, and his father, Walter John Daut.
Dennis will be dearly missed by family and friends. His passion for good food and fine wine, along with cheerful conversation, were his hallmark. He loved the outdoors, with hiking one of his greatest pleasures. Taking long walks with his dogs and gardening were his main relaxations. He was a diligent follower of the news, reading newspapers and finishing the New York Times crossword puzzle daily. Following retirement, he returned to pursuit of knowledge, taking numerous classes at nearby colleges in poetry and Russian literature, among other subjects.
Dennis was born in 1939 in East St. Louis, Ill. He and his family moved to Fairview Heights, Ill., in 1952. Dennis attended Assumption High School in East St. Louis; St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas; and the University of Illinois College of Medicine, graduating in 1963. He joined the American Board of Pathology in anatomic and clinical pathology in 1969; he was board certified for hematology in 1976. He served as a fellow at Memorial Sloan Kettering in 1968-1969.
He served in the Air Force at Walter Reed Army Medical Center as a major from 1968 to 1975.
After living 10 years in Ridgewood, N.J., where he worked at the Valley Hospital, Dennis moved to Lake Oswego in 1990. He worked at the Willamette Falls Hospital as head of pathology until his retirement in 2000.
A private memorial ceremony is planned for his family.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Oregon Humane Society, in Dennis’s name, for the group’s dedication to rescuing animals (503) 285-7722).
