Obituary of Gertrud Reutter
Gertrud Reutter passed away peacefully at home in Lake Oswego, surrounded by family, on February 11th, 2012, at the age of 75. She had fought a long and courageous battle with cancer. Gertrud was born inMähringen,Germany, on June 3, 1936, to Karl and Käte Schlumberger, the oldest of four children. She married Robert Reutter on June 15, 1957. The couple moved to theU.S. in 1958 with their first child, Susan. After daughters Isabel and Caroline were born, the family settled inPalo Alto,California. Gertrud began to attend community college, taking courses in German Literature. She eventually obtained a master’s degree in German Literature fromSan JoseState, and took doctoral courses at UC Berkeley. Gertrud taught German Language and Literature atChabotCollege and then UC Santa Cruz for over 20 years.
Upon retirement in 2000, Gertrud and Bob travelled abroad for nine months, and finally moved from Palo Altoto Lake Oswego, Oregon. Gertrud was always eager to get the whole family together whenever possible. She was so proud of her daughters and grandchildren, and loved being involved and interested in their lives. Mama/Oma will be dearly missed. The family can’t imagine the numerous yearly celebrations and gatherings happening without her wonderful presence. In addition to the family she held so dear, Gertrud had a passion for literature, music, art, lively political conversation (she read through the New York Times every day, as well as the German paper Die Zeit), travelling, and gardening.
She is survived by her loving family: husband Bob of 54 years, daughters Susan Reutter-Harrah (John) of West Linn, Isabel Bowles of San Diego, and Caroline of Oakland; and four grandchildren: Danielle, Nikki, Toby and Kathrin. In addition to her immediate family here, Gertrud leaves behind family inGermany: her sister Gisela (Dieter), and brothers Karle (Edda) and Friedemann (Doris), and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, February 18th, 2:00pm, at Prince ofLifeLutheranChurch,13896 S. Meyers Road,Oregon City. Bob and family would like to especially thank the wonderful caregivers of Legacy Hospice. Memorial donations can be made to Legacy Hospice or Prince of Life Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.
