Obituary of Jay Zimmerman

Jay Darrell Zimmerman was born in Puyallup, Washington to Charles and Mabel Zimmerman. He had one older brother and 2 younger sisters. He graduated in 1940 from Puyallup High School and served in the army from 1942, going into Japan as occupation troops before being discharged in 1946. In 1948 he married Brita Skoog of Olympia, Washington. After graduation from Pacific Lutheran College in 1950 and ordination into the Augustana Lutheran Church in 1954, he served congregations in Washington, California, Kansas and Oregon. He was a compassionate, caring pastor, father and grandparent who meticulously cared for anyone or anything for which he felt responsible. His creative personality resulted in renovated churches, houses and landscaping. He is survived by Brita, his wife of 63 years, his sister Margot and his 3 children, David (Cindy), Kathy White (Bill), Cheryl McDonough (Steve), 9 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be sent to ELCA World Hunger, St. Luke Lutheran Church or Legacy Hospice Services. A memorial service will be at 1:30 pm on Sunday, October 30th, at St. Luke Lutheran Church, Portland.
