He moved to El Paso, TX with his family at an early age where he met his future wife. Gary and Ruth Backer were married on March 20, 1958. They had been married for 53 years at the time of his death. In 1967, Gary moved to Molalla, OR with his wife and children. He worked in construction as a home builder and built many homes in the Molalla area. He was an avid member of the Canby Rod and Gun Club. He loved spending time with his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his Father and Mother.
