Obituary of Joan Butner Glascock
Joan Butner was born in Bwana M’kubwa, a copper mining settlement in Northern Rhodesia, Africa, where her father was a mining engineer. Her family lived there until Joan was 5, then spent a period in the U.S. and later lived in the Philippines for 3 years. When Joan was 12, her family moved to Berkeley, Ca., where Joan attended high school. Joan graduated from Mills College with a bachelor’s degree in botany. She worked for 4 years as the botanist at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History and did graduate work at UW. In 1951, she married Hardin Glascock and moved to Eugene, where their three children were born. The family later lived in Milwaukie, then in McLean, Va. In the late 70’s Joan returned to Oregon, living first in Corvallis, where she worked at OSU, and then the Portland area, where she worked for the Oregon Dept. of Environmental Quality for several years. In 1998 she moved to Rose Villa, a retirement community in Milwaukie, where she edited the resident newsletter.
Joan’s lifelong hobby and passion was raising tropical fish. She enjoyed observing nature, especially plants and birds, and was an avid photographer. She was a great fan of mystery novels, and in her later years, enjoyed taking courses in creative writing.
Joan was preceded in death by her brother, Worth, and is survived by her brother, Myles Butner; daughter, Susan Glascock, and her husband, Paul Cisterino; son, Russell Glascock, and his wife, Linda; son, Robert Glascock, and his wife, Peggy; and grandsons Gregory and Timothy Glascock.
