Obituary of Earl Glenn Davis

Earl Glenn Davis May 6, 1915 – August 7, 2011, Newberg, Oregon. Earl, a beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away at his home in Newberg while surrounded by his loving family. Earl was born and grew-up in Page, North Dakota. In 1933, Earl graduated from Page High School, and later met the love of his life – Ruth Margaret Davis, who he married on June 30, 1937. After their marriage, Earl and Ruth lived with his parents and siblings on the Davis Farm in Page. Earl’s independent and entrepreneurial spirit motivated him to start raising chickens to bring in extra money that could be saved to buy his own homestead. In XXX Earl and Ruth had saved enough money to buy their first farm. Over the next twenty years, Earl came to be known as one of North Dakota’s most highly respected farmers. As he worked to grow the farm, Earl and Ruth also sprouted a crop of children, which grew to be twelve – eight boys and four girls. While farming was the center of his life, Earl always found time to gather his family to go fishing, visit family, and drive around in the family car to see how the crops were doing. Earl also loved to take his family on road trips. One such trip brought the family to Oregon, where Earl found his next farming venture – a dairy farm near St. Paul. In 1959 he moved the family from Page to the new dairy farm, where he milked 125 cows and raised feed. In 1969, Earl and Ruth moved with their kids still at home, across the Willamette River to Newberg, Oregon, where they bought another dairy farm. Earl and Ruth worked this dairy farm together until retiring in 1985. Over the years, Earl took pleasure in sharing the beautiful sights of Oregon with family members that would visit. Whether it was the Oregon Coast, Mt. Hood or the Columbia Gorge, he would always find time between the morning and the afternoon milking and farm chores to tour visitors around these sights. Many of these visits were captured on the family camera – the Brownie, the Polaroid or the Bell and Howell Super 8. Another one of his favorite adventures was taking family and friends out on charter fishing trips off the coast of Oregon to catch salmon. After retiring from farming, Earl and Ruth would spend the winter in Arizona, where they enjoyed the beautiful sunrises and sunsets; and dropping a few coins in the slot machines at the casino. Earl had a talent for wandering around the slots and finding the machine that was ready to drop a jackpot. Over the years, Earl enjoyed the company of his family. He often traveled with his children to North Dakota, the Oregon Coast and Arizona. Earl and Ruth hosted the entire family for holidays, and always enjoyed visits from their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Earl will always be remembered for his warm greeting – a slight smile and a soft slap on the shoulder. His code for “I love you” to his family and friends. Until his passing, Earl lived in Newberg near his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be missed by his children: Allan, Harold, Richard, Kathy, James, Marilyn, Betty, Frances (Doc), Donald and Julie; in-laws, Paula, Judy, Gary, Bonnie, Gerald, Lee and Chris; Grandchildren: Kirk, Clark, Todd, Janelle, Jill, Nancy, Gwen, Elizabeth, Mary, Colleen, Freddie, Heather, Robert, Emily, Amber, Audria, Christy Lee, Jared, Jason and Lindsay; 29 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.
