William Webber

Obituary of William C. Webber

The singular child of Ernest Webber, English immigrant from Land’s End, and Anna Bruder, the daughter of German immigrants from Munich, Bill Webber graduated from Jefferson High School in Portland. In 1954, a daughter of family friends jumped on the back of his motorcycle; Martha Jacques and Bill were married and enjoyed the idyllic life of a perfect couple for over 56 years. Bill is survived by Martha, a daughter and three sons, and 8 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Bill was recognized in early childhood as a mechanical prodigy. In 1942 he secured an apprenticeship at NW Marine Works in Portland, and thereafter worked as a journeyman at Central Machine. Bill’s unique engineering talents and clever approach to design issues won him a coveted position in the early 60’s on the R&D team at the fledgling Tektronix in Beaverton. After nearly a decade on cutting edge technical projects, he was solicited as part of the product development team for a state-of-the-art plastics formulation and production facility. In 1973 the winds changed and Bill and Martha purchased a restaurant in Raleigh Hills. Bill was known to the community for 18 years as ‘the moustache guy’ who never tired of giving people a good deal and a bit of a chat. In later years, Bill enjoyed travelling, ‘the beach’, his life-long role as ‘Mr. Fix-it Man’, and making most excellent birdhouses. Bill Webber remains loved and revered by all he touched.
