Obituary of Rose Greenblatt
Rose Greenblatt passed away August 2, 2011 at the age of 95 in Portland, Oregon.
She was born July 9, 1916 in Buffalo, NY and was raised in Saratoga Springs, NY. She received her B.A. from Skidmore College and a Masters Degree in Library Science from Pratt Institute. Rose worked as a librarian in the Brooklyn Public Library system for 17 years. She is survived by her three daughters, Linda Esterling of Portland (and her husband Donald), Susan Neuffer of New York, NY (and her husband Damian) and Judith Greenblatt of Atlanta, Georgia, and by her grandson Daniel Esterling (and fiance Lauren Ogden). Rose also leaves behind 3 nieces, Ellen Hellman, Debbie Hellman and Karen Selig, and a nephew, Paul Eisland, and their children and grandchildren (her great and great-great nieces and nephews). Rose also is survived by many, many friends of all ages.
Friends and family remember Rose as a smart, compassionate lady who never hesitated to express her opinion in a charming and gracious way. She was always sincerely interested in others. She loved music, theater and art. Rose was an avid reader, who only discontinued her 50-year subscription to The New Yorker magazine when macular degeneration caused her to lose much of her vision. She then depended on public radio and talking books to keep learning new things.
She enjoyed traveling with her beloved sisters, Ruth and Nettie, now deceased, her daughters, and many travel groups. She was a loyal supporter of her alma mater and a number of charitable organizations.
Late in her life, Rose overcame her disillusionment at the Dodgers desertion of Brooklyn and became a devoted Yankees fan. Derek Jeter returned the love by hitting a home run (and his historic 3000th hit) on her 95th birthday, July 9.
A memorial service will be held in New York City at 4pm on Sunday, August 28 at the Society for Ethical Culture, 2 West 64 Street. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the following organizations:
