Obituary of Katherine Patterson Dougherty
Katherine “Kay” Dougherty passed away peacefully on July 10, 2011 from natural causes. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Dr. William Eugene Dougherty, and children: Linda Gamm of St. Louis, MO, John Dougherty of Portland, Colleen Ploch of Napa, CA William Dougherty of Warrenton, OR, and Patricia Dougherty of Portland, 12 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter.Kay was predeceased by her brothers, Arthur and James, and sister, Ethel Patterson, of Spokane, WA.
Kay was born in Sandpoint , ID to Arthur and Mary Belle Patterson on March 27, 1921. She graduated in 1939 from Holy Names Academy in Spokane, WA. She went on to become a dental hygienist, graduating from North Pacific Dental School in Portland. It was at the dental school where she met her husband, Gene. They were married on August 20, 1942.
Kay had many interests, including bridge, golf and traveling. She had a special love for music. As a high school student she sang on the radio and played the violin in the school orchestra. Kay was very involved with many organizations and clubs. She was president of her hygiene class and was active with the Women’s Golf Associations at Columbia Edgewater Country Club and Waverly Golf Club. Kay was president of the Oregon Women’s Senior Golf Association. She loved to cook and entertain at her home. She leaves behind love and kindness. Her final words were, “I’m fine”. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends and especially her loving husband, Gene.
