Obituary of Paul Peter Tinning
Paul Tinning died peacefully, courageously, and lovingly on June 8th, 2011. His greatest accomplishments and his greatest source of pride were his children, Scott Charles Currey Tinning (Melissa), Karin Kathleen Tinning and Michael Paul Tinning (Sasha). We lost him four years ago to the horrific ravages of Alzheimer's as he lost his ability to judge, reason and decide. Those were his greatest qualities as an arbitrator and labor relations genius. He always maintained his integrity and decided cases based on merits, not political machinations. We admired him. Paul was born April 20th, 1928 in Union City Jersey and never lost his accent. After graduating from Rutgers University (the first in his family to graduate) he was hired by the New Jersey Board of Mediation. Appointed by Governor Straub in 1958 he came to Oregon to head the Oregon Department of Meditation and Conciliation Service, and where he met his first and only wife Carla Tinning. He moved his family to Hawaii in 1969 to accept a position teaching Labor Relations at the University of Hawaii. He was happiest at the beach and in the classroom. He resolved the teachers strike in 1974, the biggest ever in the state -- and we got 3 weeks off from school! Returning to Oregon in 1978, he traveled the West Coast, CA, WA, AK, and Hawaii to arbitrate privately. A long- time Mason ( 50 years), veteran of the Army and Navy, Deacon at Saint Andrews Presbyterian -- Paul loved serving. He is missed by his colleagues, his children, and his beautiful grandchildren, David (Jamie), Katie (Mikal), Michael (deceased), Christopher, Sara, and Amanda. His great grandchildren Landon and "one on the way" will never know him. A special acknowledgment to the Angel Caretakers at Tabor Crest. They took extraordinary care of him. Their gifts of love, guidance, compassion, and grace will never be forgotten. To a major "picky eater", "clean freak", brilliant, funny, compassionate, brave man, we love you. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Nourish the Children (basket in vestibule) or the Alzheimer's Foundation of America. Funeral arrangements by Crown Memorial Center - Milwaukie
