Obituary of Lloyd R. McCorkle
WWII Vet, Safeway Executive, Devoted Husband and Father, passed away April 15, 2011. He was 85. Originally from Avard, OK, Lloyd grew up in the panhandle of Texas. His education at West Texas State was interrupted as he enlisted in the Navy after Pearl Harbor, where he served in the Pacific Theater. Lloyd completed college at Colorado State, and received his Masters in Dairy Agriculture from Washington State. Lloyd briefly worked with the Denver Health Department, and then began a 37-year career with Safeway. In 1959, Lloyd moved his young family to Portland, as Safeway's Milk Plant Manager. He later designed a new plant implementing new technologies, and headed up the team responsible for getting it built at Safeway's distribution center in Clackamas. He managed that plant until his retirement in 1988. Lloyd was married to Lola Word for 45 years, who predeceased him in 1997. Lloyd and Lola were active as members of Trinity United Methodist Church, and big supporters of the athletic programs their sons participated in at Milwaukie High. Having grown up in the heartland on a ranch and farm, Lloyd and Lola were both avid outdoor people who camped, water and snow skied throughout the Pacific Northwest, and upon their retirement, traveled extensively throughout the US, Mexico and Canada in a motor coach. In 1997, Lloyd relocated to the Palm Springs area, returning to Milwaukie in 2005. He is survived by sons Rob (Cheryl) of Ridgefield, CT, Ray (Katie) of Redmond, WA, Pat of Portland and Kent of Kirkland, WA, 6 grandchildren, Boyd, Devon, Kelby, Garret, Randal, and Jenny, sisters, Martha Stewart of Dallas, TX and Doris Ramsel of Sterling, CO, and many special nieces and nephews. Those wishing to join the family in celebrating Lloyd's life may do so on Saturday, May 21, 2011, 2 PM, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 3915 SE Steele Street, Portland.
