Obituary of Evelyn Mary Combs
Evelyn Mary Combs of Lake Oswego, OR passed away November 4th, 2010 at Legacy Hopewell House Hospice after a sudden onset of cancer. She was 79. Born December 12, 1930 in New York City, NY she graduated from Hunter High School for Gifted Girls, also in New York City. After marrying Jack Vincent Combs the young couple moved to San Marino, California and resided there for 34 years before moving to Oregon, where she spent the last 25 years of her life. After high school Evelyn enrolled in art classes and took a keen interest in history and literature. She went on to find work as a fashion model before becoming a buyer and seller of fine jewelry in Pasadena, CA. A very active citizen, she was a member of the San Marino Women’s Club, was President of the Friday Morning Club in Los Angeles, CA and a former President of Lakewood Center Associates. She was a member of the Lake Oswego Republican Women’s Club, and also was involved with the Lake Grove Presbyterian Church, having also been a member of Immanuel Presbyterian Church of Los Angeles, CA. She was the consummate volunteer, including as a tutor at the local school. She excelled at knitting and enjoyed the company of others at All About Yarn, where she was very active in their knitting clubs. She loved shopping, art, history, literature, was a talented painter, bowler, seamstress, decorator and gourmet cook. She loved to travel and experience other cultures, was devoted to her family, was a fan of a variety of musical forms from classical to Frank Sinatra, and was an unabashed animal lover. In May of this year she was elected as a Republican Committee Person, Precinct 159. Evelyn is survived by her daughters Jacquelyn Lee Combs of Oakhurst, CA, Jean Evelyn Combs Derr (Dennis) of Camarillo, CA and Joanne Combs Kihei (Wayne) of Santa Cruz, CA. Evelyn is further survived by her grandchildren Natalie Winona Derr of Camarillo, CA and U.S. Army PFC Jeremy L. Derr (currently serving in Afghanistan). Evelyn also leaves behind her beloved schnauzer, Muenchkin, and her numerous friends and neighbors and relatives, all of whom she considered as family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Vincent Combs, who passed away in 1999. A Memorial Service for Evelyn will be held at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, November 14th a the Lake Grove Presbyterian Church, 4040 Sunset Drive, Lake Oswego, OR. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to Lakewood Presbyterian Church or the Humane Society of America. Arrangements by Crown Memorial Center – Tualatin.
