Obituary of Joan Edith Schmitt

Joan Schmitt, 93, of Dallas died October 4 in McMinnville. She was born in Roslin, BC, Canada to John and Fhilomena Colistro. At the age of 7 her family moved to Portland in search of a better life for the children. She was the 8th daughter of 10 sisters in an Italian family that also raised 2 cousins. Joan met the love of her life Henry E Schmitt in Salem. They married and settled on the family farm in Dallas raising two sons, Henry Jr. and Michael. Joan had many jobs in her lifetime but her greatest passion was her life at Central School District in Independence and Monmouth where she was the health coordinator for over 30 years. She dedicated her life to the needs of the children. She provided food, clothing, coats, shoes, and medical needs. She retired at the age of 92 in 2009. Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Henry, in 1995; grandson, Jimmy Schmitt, in 1970; and 7 sisters. Survivors include sons Henry Schmitt Jr. of Arizona, Michael (Joy) Schmitt of Dallas; sisters Gloria Catalan and Lorraine Livesay of Portland; Twelve grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. A Memorial Service is at 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 12, at St Philips Catholic Church in Dallas.
