Obituary of Roland Herbert Hinsz

Roland Herbert Hinsz, 87, of Portland, passed away on December 19, 2019 in Portland, OR.He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Bonnie, who he lost on February 29, 2016. Roland is survived by his children, Christina Rilatt (John), David Hinsz (Diana), John Hinsz (Hannah), and Rebecca DeForrest (Brian); and grandchildren; Sarah (AJ), Mary (Branden), Francheska (Casey), Mathew, Jacquelynn, Michael, Malachi, Shelby, Eleanor, and Zakkery. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, January 10, 2020 at Willamette National Cemetery. Roland was born in Golden Valley, North Dakota to Otto Hinsz and Ida Hinsz (Stern) on July 18, 1932.After attending Jefferson High School in Portland, OR, he joined the Oregon Army National Guard from February 1949 to January 1952. He then served the Regular Army from February 1952 through January 1954.From there, Roland served in the United States Army Reserve from January 1954 through February 1960. Roland Attended the Oregon NCO Academy from February 3, 1963 to April 28, 1963.Roland ended his military career (total of 16 years) as an Army Staff Sergeant (E-6) on December 14, 1966. Roland married Bonnie Judith Short on June 28, 1964 in Washington State. He worked at Freightliner’s Manufacturing Plant in North Portland until his retirement in October 1999.They spent many happy years together visiting the coast, raising children and enjoying grandchildren.Roland’s last two years of life was fill by spending a great deal of time with his youngest grandson (Zakkery), who was not yet old enough for school.Time well spent sharing breakfast time, lunch time, park/play time and nap time. This brought great joy to him. Roland’s family would like to extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Breeze and his care team, Providence Palliative Care and Providence Hospice for their care and compassion to both our parents over these past 12 years.Both Roland and Bonnie trusted and appreciated the work and care these individuals offered them.
