Obituary of Eddie Vernon Logsdon
Eddie Vernon Logsdon Jr., “Vern” 84, passed away on 11/16/2019 at his home in Tualatin, surrounded by his family, after a long battle with cancer.
He was born in Rainier, WA on 7/3/1935 to Eddie Vernon Logsdon Sr. and Thelma (Whiteside) Logsdon. He lived in the Astoria and Warrenton area most of his life. He enlisted in the Army in 1951 and was stationed in Germany. After his service, he lived briefly in Portland & Seattle, working as an installer for cable companies. He then moved to California. That was where he met his future wife Linda.
Vern and Linda were married on 2/21/1965 in Pleasanton, CA. They lived in California until 1974, when they moved to Lopez Island, WA. Vern loved living there. He made friends with some of the pilots at the airstrip across from their house. One of his favorite activities was riding in the 4-seater planes while the pilots did aerobatic maneuvers such as dives, loops, & crazy 8’s. They moved to Astoria in 1976, bought the same house that he grew up in, and continued to live there and raise their family until 1994. Vern & Linda then moved to a smaller home in Warrenton, where he lived until 2017.
Vern worked as a lineman for the phone company. He retired in 1997. He bought a sailboat and wanted to travel the world in it. Unfortunately, health issues stopped him from doing that. He still enjoyed spending time at the boat, just hanging out reading a good book, with his faithful dog Max by his side. His favorite hobby was by far reading. He read everything from Aztec civilization discoveries to Yogi practices. Didn’t matter what the subject was, as long as it had a cover and words on the pages, it was a treasure to him.
His other passion in life was animals. His daughters grew up in a house full of rescued dogs and cats. If there was a stray animal in need it somehow found its way to Vern’s house. The local vet called often with the need for a temporary foster home, and Vern never said no. He passed on his love of rescue animals to his family, who now all have dogs adopted from shelters. All of his pets became part of the family. He always said “Lock your wife & your dog in the trunk of the car. In two hours open the trunk and guess which one will be happy to see you”. Of course, he never did that, but Vern always enjoyed a good joke! And he always had a joke to tell you!
Vern is survived by his 2 daughters and their spouses, Laurie & Mark Forbes of Tualatin and Leslie & Dave Haskell of Astoria. 3 granddaughters and their spouses, Jessica & Arun Kumar, Shelby & Justin Gagnon, and Bailey Haskell. 2 great-grandchildren, Jackson Gagnon & Indra Kumar. He is also survived by his sister, Carolyn Brooks, his Aunt Marge Classen and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife Linda, and his parents.
At Vern’s request there will be no service. Memorial donations may be made to any animal rescue organization.
