Obituary of Robin Lee Elliott

Robin Lee Elliott Feb 6 1931 – Sept 29 2019 Robin passed peacefully at the Oregon Veterans Home, Lebanon Oregon where he had been a resident since June 2017. Declining health combined with Dementia was the cause of death. An Oregon Native born in Tillamook to Lavena Jessica Davis. Robin spent his early years living in Eugene area. Later moving to Astoria where he attended school until joining the Navy reserve in April 1948. One of his first duties as a Naval Reserve was sand bagging operations at Vanport City during the Vanport flood, Memorial Day 1948. He carried sand bags to repair the break in the dike that flooded the Military Housing area that is now Delta Park. There was nothing for the workers to eat where they were working on the dike. The Red Cross eventually brought them coffee and Sandwiches in the cold rain. Robin was called to active duty November 1950 then deployed to Korea aboard the USS Hanna DE 449. He saw combat through shelling the beach in support of ground troops on Shore. Robin returned to San Diego December 1950 then transferred to the USS Rankin AkA-103 before returning to Astoria and being released from active duty in July 1952. He would receive an Honorable discharge from the Naval Reserve September 1953. That same year Robin married Eleanor Olsen of Brownsmead Oregon. Eleanor gave birth to two sons William in 1954 and Richard in 1958. Robin became an Astoria Police man around 1955. In the years that followed he became the youngest Sargent promoted to that rank in Astoria at the time. Robin Resigned from the Astoria Police Department July 1960 and worked odd jobs until being hired by the City of Astoria. That was the spring board for being hired by the Department of Veterans Affairs in Portland as a review appraiser. In 1967 the Elliott family moved to Parkrose in support of this new job and lived there until 1975. Robin loved the United States of America and showed it through the Organizations he joined and the events he supported. Being a lifelong member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign War’s and several Elks Organizations he volunteered to play, ”Taps” at Veterans funeral’s until declining health prevented him from continuing to play the Bugle. Joining the Mason’s in 1958 he eventually became a 33rd degree Mason receiving his 60 year award in 2019 from Lents Lodge in Portland while a resident of the Oregon Veterans Home. Robin went on to be a Shriner and it would be his passion for many years. He devoted a great deal of his time and focused with in the Al-Kader Shriners in Wilsonville. The last 37 years of his life was living in the Milwaukie area. Where he was active with in the community. Always helping others in his own time of need was Robin. Whether family or friends he always lend a helping hand and a smile. He will be remembered and missed by everyone who knew him. As the strength of the Elliott Family there is a missing place that will never be replaced and forever remembered as Dad, the generous, understanding heart. I wish to thank Friends and family for the shared memories and kind words in a really Challenging time. Please leave a comment through this web site or the Oregonian Obituary.
