You were always way more than just an uncle to me . I wish we could meet for one more breakfast or lunch so I could apologize for the time I nearly ripped the front end out from under your log truck with my skidder when I hurriedly jerked you out of that deep mudhole on Carroll Creek Road . I nearly broke my bull line ! Miss you old feller .

Gene was a great man who did not allow his physical disability to slow him down. He faithfully shared the Lord with my Dad while waiting to have his logging truck loaded. Thank you Gene for your great example!

I have so many wonderful memories we shared with Gene and Gwen. The miles driven together to Jungle Camp in southern Mexico were special. I needed to take my son to the dentist. The one Wycliffe people used was on the other side of Mexico City from where we were staying. Gene loaned me their almost new station wagon to drive from Tlalpan to the other end of that huge city. If you haven't driven in Mexico City, you don't understand what an amazing act of generosity that was!! The rule of the road was if you could get your bumper ahead of the other car's bumper, you had the right-of-way. That can be very interesting on a freeway. I remember well the water possum we had for Easter breakfast after my husband snatched it off a beam in the dining hall and he and Gene went off to dispatch it and get it ready for the next morning. Delicious! Gene and I were on the same Naja trip - around 20 miles of walking or riding a horse over a mountain. That must have been a tough trip for Gene, but he always wore a smile. We were also on the same canoe trip. My husband was bummed because he didn't get to make those trips with Gene. We were both in South America but traveling from our location to theirs (and vice versa) was not a possibility. It was years before we saw them again in Joseph. They were the kind of friends where time melted between contact. We were instantly back to the friendship we had previously enjoyed. We were able to visit the church in Haines when Gene was pastor. When we walked in, we could feel the influence of Gene and Gwen. We were in the midst of like-minded people. In spite of his physical problems, Gene conducted my husband's funeral service and I appreciated that more than I can say. I can imagine the two of them in heaven together, hashing over old times with a new perspective. I pray that the weather in March won't keep me from being at his service.
