Obituary of Betty Maxine Johnston

Betty Maxine Johnston July 8, 1927-August 28, 2019 Mom went to Heaven Betty started her journey on earth on July 8, 1927, in Portland, OR. Mom was the middle child of George Fletcher Barnes and Sallie Jane (Sapp) Barnes. Sister to George ‘Bud’ Barnes and Joyce Ann (Barnes) Sullivan. Growing up during the depression there were many moves around the Milwaukie/Wichita area. She attended Wichita grade school and Milwaukie High School. Mom worked for Meier and Frank and Olds & Kings. After World War ll, Meier and Frank had a dinner honoring our veterans. Employee’s were allowed to bring a guest. Mom asked William (Bill) Johnston to the dinner (they had known each other from childhood), they started dating later marrying. Dad went to school in Chicago to become a TV repair person. They both loved Chicago and had many wonderful memories there. They came back to Portland, with dad gitting a job with Sears. This brought more travels, the first stop was Juneau Alaska, then Seattle Washington. Along the way they picked up Susan and Kirk. After Seattle we moved back to the Jennings Lodge area of Milwaukie. When were in grade school mom was a cub scout leader, brownie leader and PTA president. Mom and Dad divorced. She started working at Stuart Anderson’s Cattle Company as the bookkeeper, she worked for them for over 20 years. She then finished her career at the Elsie Stuhr Center as the bookkeeper. Mom volunteered at the Wichita Family Center and was the Nutritional chair for the Senior Centers of Clackamas County. Mom had many interests including, Reading, Sudoku and Ironing. She also loved to climb and hike. She climbed to the top of MT. Saint Helen’s, Mount Hood and hiked many parts of the Pacific Coast trail. Betty is survived by her children Susan (Steve) Trafton and Kirk along with her two grandsons Sean and Kirk. Her sister Joyce, and many nieces and nephews. Along with her last dog Boo. A private family luncheon is to be held at a later date.
