Obituary of Janet Louise Scalf
It is with profound sadness I announce the passing of Janet Louise (Ralston) Scalf, my loving and devoted mother and friend to all whose lives she touched. She passed on May2, 2019, from natural causes related to congestive heart failure.
She left us, just three months shy of her 94th birthday while sleeping peacefully in the wee hours of the morning. Not wanting to disturb anyone, her amazing spirit left quietly proving with every breath, right up to the last…she continually put others before herself.
Janet was born August 31, 1925. After Jan’s mother died when Janet was five years old, she was raised with her only sister June in Wisconsin by her much beloved father Ollie Ralston.
She embraced a life full of energy and grace and is survived by, daughter Sherry McVey, son Terry Hueffed and his wife Nancy; her grandchildren Todd Hueffed and Jana Chinn; and her nieces Tami Worley and husband Ron, Rene Kohler and Nylene Steinman.
A celebration of Jan’s life will be held at Willamette National Cemetery(11800 SE Mt. Scott Blvd., Portland, Oregon 97086), Wednesday May 29, at 2:30 p.m. Janet will be laid to rest next to her late husband Veryl Scalf. This will be a small and intimate celebration (please RSVP) to Sherry McVey via Facebook if you would like to attend as there will be small bites at this celebration and we require an accurate count. Her children will then host a dessert gathering the same day at 7:30 p.m. at Jan’s home in her honor where they will offer a dessert they made from scratch from a recipe Janet made through the years with her own hands, this is also open but please RSVP to Sherry McVey. Straight from the family recipe cook book, Janet wrote this inscription revealing one of her pearls of wisdom: Setting a beautiful table and serving excellent food is an expression of love. Love Mom.
Other Lessons she imparted included: everyone has an interesting story to tell if you only ask; nothing in life is fair; and do the best with what you’ve got.
She worked as a full-time manager at Providence Hospital in Human Resources for many years before retiring. Among her many passions travelling, cooking, fine dining, dancing and entertaining reigned supreme. She was highly regarded for her elegant style, always dressing to the nines, for her culinary expertise, knowledge of etiquette, her ability to set a beautiful table, but most importantly for making events in peoples lives special and developing strong friendships through her giving, fun-loving nature sparked with humor and zest for life.
Janet loved her family and a large circle of friends and instilled in her children strong values that have served them well. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.
