Obituary of Don W. Martin
Don passed away May 12, 2019 at his Portland home after a long illness. Don was born and raised in Michigan and spent most of his life there. In 1999, he and his wife, Beverly, moved to Hood River, Oregon and then to Portland in 2008.
Don attended the University of Miami but left early to enlist in the United States Air Force with his older brother, Dave. Don held many jobs in Sales, but eventually became a Sales Rep and Manager for GTE in Michigan. Community service was a thread woven through his life, wherever he lived: He was Officer in the Muskegon Heights Rotary, served on the board of the Girl Scouts in Muskegon, Michigan, Bookkeeper for the Muskegon Unity Church, an Ambassador for Hood River, Oregon, and an AARP Tax Aide volunteer.
As a young man, Don enjoyed hunting, golfing, and recreational sailing. Over the years he became a carpenter, a wood carver, and a metal sculptor. He was quietly proficient in all these pursuits. He was a reader – a quiet man, but he could spin funny stories and entertain a crowd. He loved his family, his friends and was warm to all he met.
Don is survived by Beverly and his sons Michael, Jeffrey, and Patrick, and daughters Terri Daniels and Cheryl Roberts, 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife Jackie, his brother David, and granddaughter Amanda.
Memorial service will be held on May 25th at 4:00pm at First Unitarian Church (Eliot Chapel), SW 12th and Salmon Street, Portland.
