Obituary of Joseph Carl Haertel

June 5, 1947 to April 7, 2010 Joe went home to be with his Lord, peacefully, from the comfort of his home surrounded by family and friends. He will be missed but only temporarily as we Will see him again. Joe was born in Portland and spent his entire life in Oregon and Washington. He was a tender-hearted, compassionate and a gentle man who loved to tell a good story and enjoy a quiet laugh. He spent his early life working in the lumber industry. He loved the outdoors and was an enthusiastic fisherman. In recent years, unable to walk, he joyfully gave grandchildren rides on his lap in the power chair. Other times he could be seen sitting outside with a cat on his lap. He loved using the riding lawnmower and would trim trees and help with the vegetable garden from his chair. Each Christmas his favorite activity was adding happiness to others as he assisted with Christmas tree sales. Joe was preceded in death by his mother and step father, Peter and Bessie Lane; father Edward Haertel; brothers Frederick, Raymond, Frank and Cecil Haertel; and stepson Darrell Mapes. He is survived by his wife Nancy; children Lori and Zachary; daughter-in-law Chris Gotcher; grandchildren, Jonah, Trešure and Syr; brother Albert (Rene) Haertel; sisters Carrie (Burt) Galloway, Edith (Ken) Noteboom, Lisa Nelson and Lucy (Greg) Brown; and many nieces and nephews, all who loved him dearly. A memorial service will be held 3:00 p.m., Sunday, April 11, 2010 at the Church of God, 14810 Skelton Rd SE, Jefferson, OR. Arrangements entrusted to Crown Memorial Center - Salem
