On behalf of the Docent Council at the Portland Art Museum I would like to offer our sincere condolences on the passing of Mary. She was in the Docent Class of 2004. One of her classmates Christine Nelson shared this memory: “On the way home from a docent trip (to Tacoma or Seattle) our bus driver took a small detour to drop off Mary at the Salmon Creek Transit Center where her husband Harley was waiting on his motorcycle. Mary ran over to him, put on her helmet and mounted the cycle. With a smile and wave to all of us on the bus, off they roared! Whenever I hear her name, that image pops up. She wasn't afraid to try new things and, as a result, had a rich and rewarding life.” A memory of her that stands out for me is in 2015 when we docents volunteered to make a centerpiece for a docent luncheon. I think the theme had to do with reflecting a current exhibit. I liked hers so much I took a couple pictures of it. Although the photos don’t do it justice, it was very creative. It was about the activist/artist Ai Weiwei who famously shattered an ancient Han dynasty vase, wrote Coca Cola across another, and wrote about the need for free expression and to resist totalitarianism. [Part of the quote in the book on top says, “ To protect the right of expression is a central part of an artist’s activity.”] May she rest in peace. Bobbye Gluesenkamp, Docent Class of 2009
