Obituary of Kyle David Stone

Kyle David Stone November 15, 1963 – April 10, 2022
On Sunday, April 10th at 7:10 PM, Kyle David Stone (58) passed with his girls by his side. He was peacefully sleeping at their home in Happy Valley, OR while listening to the Masters.
Kyle David Stone (our Dad) was born on November 15, 1963, to Thomas Sherman and Katherine Jean Stone in Le Mars, Iowa. Dad was the youngest of three boys. Although he wasn’t always fond of being the baby, he loved his older brothers Christopher and Kurt Stone. He took great pride in being a “Stone” boy and often reminded us of the values we stood for.
Dad moved to Portland, Oregon after college in Arkansas. He soon fell into all the beautiful natures Oregon had to offer, fishing, golfing, camping, rafting, and good beer. Coincidentally, our Mom, Cindy Jean Stone, was coming to Oregon to visit some mutual friends who worked with Dad. After a blind date and few camping/rafting trips later, they were engaged. Mom and Dad were married on June 30, 1990, in Sheboygan Falls, WI.
After tying the knot, Mom and Dad began their young professional careers in Portland, Oregon. They continued to golf and camp and enjoy each other’s company as they saved up to start a family. After a couple years of fun, their oldest daughter, Jessie Jean Stone was born on October 6, 1994. After four years of spoiling, their second daughter, Jamie Mae Stone was born on October 15, 1998. Both of us were born, in Portland, Oregon.
Mom and Dad were natural athletes, so it didn’t take long for us to develop interests in sports. It was our way of being a family. Mom’s rule was no TV during the week, but Dad always had Sports Center on. Dad’s family of girls, to this day, are big sports fans. And Dad was delighted to take on the role of “Team Mom” when we started to play competitively. For years Dad organized rides to soccer and swim practices, hotels for away tournaments and meets, and created team dinner atmospheres for all to enjoy. He was so overcome to be part of our athletic organizations. There are very few times that Dad wasn’t in the stands sporting whatever color we were wearing that day (probably a matching hat too).
Aside from being the honorary team-parent’s MVP, Dad was our family MVP. If we weren’t driving to a soccer field or swimming pool, he drove us to State Park campgrounds around the entire Pacific Northwest. We have countless memories, pictures, and laughs that center around our family camping vacations. He taught us how to camp, fish, play golf, shoot a shotgun, split firewood, drive a boat, pull jet-skis, but mostly, how to have fun!
As involved as Dad was about our sports teams and having fun, he was equally involved in our college endeavors. He and our mom were adamant for us to further our educational dreams. He not only moved us in, he helped us pick out our first dorms, did Target runs, and tried out our meal plans. He was there for us in every step of the way to adulthood. We both graduated College now, and to this day, we think those were some of the happiest, proudest, and most honored days of his life.
In December of 2019 we discovered Dad’s first signs of cancer. In the following months, we were devastated by the continued prognosis of this awful disease. We couldn’t bare what that meant, but Dad was a fighter and boy did he give that cancer a helluave fight!
In the proceeding months, our Mom and Dad got to do some amazing things. They accomplished a three-week road trip across Oregon, Montana, and onward to Green Lake, WI where they spent some time with extended family. Our parents flew to HI with friends where Dad, second to Oregon, breathed in the air of his favorite place. Dad played rounds of golf at Pebble Beach, Bandon Dunes, and some of the Kohler courses alongside his favorite people.
His last trip was very dear to our heart; he mustered up the energy to create a lasting memory in the Arizona desert. Both of us graduated from Arizona State schools, and we’ve always appreciated our time together in Arizona.
We are forever grateful for the fun times we’ve had and for our friends that have become our family. While it’s still unfathomable for us to move on; we know our community is one-of-a-kind. Our Papi’s Celebration of Life will be Friday, July 29, 2022, at Carver Event Center from 2:00 – 9:00 PM. Please wear blue. Video presentation starts at 5:30 PM.
Thank you for all the kind words, gestures, gifts, meals, and flowers. Dad knew how to light up a room, was compassionate and genuine, humble, the life of a party, and mostly he was lovable (he really knew how to make us all laugh). Celebrate with us this summer as his legacy lives on. Much, much, love to all.
