Obituary of Enid Ruth Briggs
OBITUARY FOR ENID RUTH BRIGGS
Enid was a true life- long educator. She was born on May 3rd, 1925 in her parent’s home on Briggs Ave. Enid fell and broke her hip on Dec. 10th and six days later went home to be with the Lord. She joined her parents, her sister, Adele, and brothers David and Jack in heaven.
Enid is survived by her nieces, Becky Scott (Al), Paula Ewald (Mike), Betsy Ray (Brian) and nephews David Briggs (Terri), and Steven Briggs (Marla). There are many great nieces, great nephews, and cousins. She is also survived by probably thousands of former students, whom she called her kids.
Enid graduated from Milwaukie High School, George Fox University, and Linfield College.
During WWII, she was a cadet in the Civil Air Patrol. She was an observer (spotter) looking for Japanese submarines in the Columbia River. She still has her Civil Air Patrol hats and patches that she wore.
Enid taught at Knappa High School from 1953 to 1974. She taught at North Clackamas Christian School from 1974 until 1987 She also coached various women’s sports including, track, softball, basketball, and volleyball. She also coached women’s sports at George Fox in the early 1950’s.
After retirement, she taught home school science groups. In her final years, she taught a weekly Nature Club and History Club at Deerfield Village Assisted Living where she resided.
Enid was a charter member of Milwaukie Covenant church, where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was very involved in the Milwaukie Garden Club and the Milwaukie Historical Society. She volunteered at Oral Hull Camp for the Blind, Milwaukie Meals on Wheels, and Parrot Creek Boys Ranch.
She was very instrumental in the early years of Clackamas Community College’s John Innskeep Environmental Learning Center. She loved gardening, nature, and conservation.
Enid has truly left a legacy to those she loved.
There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 22, 2022, at Milwaukie Covenant Church, 12201 SE Linwood Ave. Milwaukie, OR 97222 (next door to Linwood Elementary School)
