Darlene Smith
January 3, 1954 – October 18, 2019
PORTLAND, OR – Darlene Smith, 65, of Portland Oregon, passed away on Friday, October
18 th , 2019, at her home.
She was born on January 3,1954 in Danville, Ill. to Adam and Dorothy (Szymczak)
Semonick. She graduated from Westville High School and was preceded in death by her
father (Adam), previous husband (Bill Smith), and niece (Jessica Semonick). Her mother,
Dorothy Semonick and brother David Semonick are also deceased.
Surviving are her children, Carl (Amy McFarland) Hand of Portland; Brian (Tiffany) Hand of
Portland; her 5 grandchildren (Zarian, Mya, Winter, Zoe, and Odi Hand); her twin sister
Deanna Wichtowski with whom she enjoyed living with for many years, her brother Dennis
(Esther) Semonick; her nieces and nephews, Jamie (Phil) Skinner, Angel (Toby) McDaniel,
Lance (Ashley) Wichtowski, Amy Hill, Heather Semonick, Brandi Semonick and Adam
Semonick; and father of her children, Max Hand.
Darlene had a long career (40 years) in food manufacturing at Chuckles/Grist Mill in
Danville, Ill and later at Bridgetown Foods in Portland, Oregon. She also served as a Union
Steward during her time at Chuckles and enjoyed working as a Bartender at the Blue Moon
in Indiana.
Darlene could light up a room with her smile and her positivity was contagious. She
enjoyed fishing, mushroom hunting, music, family gatherings, walking, and watching her
sons and grandchildren play sports. Darlene cherished time spent with her family and
friends and is truly missed.
