Obituary of Samuel Lee Schowengerdt
Sam "Grandpa" Schowengerdt passed away at his home with his wife Carmelita, by his side. He is also survived by his 3 children and their spouses, daughter Lori, her husband Gary, son Bob, his wife De, and son Sam, his wife Brandi, 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, his sister, Penny Whitehead, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, son Mark, and 6 of his 7 siblings.
Sam was born in St. Louis, Missouri to Catherine and August Schowengerdt and was the 5th of 8 children.
Through the years, he lived in various towns in Missouri and worked on building I-44 prior to joining the Army. While in the service he earned the rank of Sargent and was stationed in Hawaii, Korea, Germany, Vietnam, and Kansas. Once he left the Army, he was a policeman in Kansas for a short time then moved back to Missouri where he got a job as a security guard. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle in the hills of Missouri, won many trophies for drag racing in his 73 Challenger, and talking on the CB radio.
His job of hauling and setting mobile homes brought the family to the Northwest. He did that for 3 years prior to going to long-haul truck driving. After doing long-haul truck driving for 10 years, he moved to being a carpenter at the shipyard at the Port of Portland where he was known as “Sam-Sam the Forklift Man”. Once retired from the shipyard, he enjoyed vacationing in Hawaii, going camping, fishing trips, spending time with his kids, grandkids, and dogs.
Sam was a kind, loving, gentle, wonderful man and will be greatly missed by all.
