Obituary of Michael James Helberg

Michael James Helberg (Plug), age 49, passed away October 9th, 2021, in Clackamas, OR. He was born on April 13, 1972 in Tacoma, Washington to Janine Helberg.

Michael has spent much of his life living in the Tacoma, WA, Portland, OR and a few years in Idaho, McMinnville, Mulino and Oregon City, OR areas. He married in McMinnville, OR February 24th, 2001 and had two children Mercedes and Kammren Helberg. Later divorced in February 2019. His entire life he enjoyed living in the Pacific northwest. Where he spent his younger years as a proud Boy Scout and later continued that work as a Boys Scout leader to his son. He enjoyed watching his children’s sporting events like wrestling and swim meets. He also enjoyed fishing, boating, gambling, and especially bow hunting. He took great pride in teaching his children and anybody who wanted to learn how to hunt and fish. The biggest joy of Mike's life has been his children and recently he became a wonderful Grandpa or Papa Mike.

Michael (Plug) was a loyal member of Local UA #290 Plumbers and Steamfitters Union for over 30 years. He started out as a helper and worked his way up through the shipyards, Natural gas pipelines and ultimately a Journeyman Pipefitter and Hydrostatic Tester. His co-workers coined his nickname after he was stuck in a pipe and needed to be pulled out by his feet. Stating he “Plugged” the pipe. "Plug" it was there ever after. Mike considered his fellow union members family. Often enjoyed spending time mentoring other helpers, apprentices, and watching his peer journeymen succeed as well.

Michael had a big heart and would give just because he could. He is survived by his children Mercedes Helberg (Austin Hamby) and Kammren Helberg. A grandson MacKinley Hamby. He's also survived by his mother Janine (Kelley) Byers, aunts Sheila (LaMont) McLachlan and Narda (Mike) Garcia, stepfather Larry (Melle) Hall, stepmother Patricia (Patsy) Hall, sisters Jennifer Hall and Melissa (Dan) Ellwein, numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins. Mike is also survived by his beloved Roni Loehr, his brother-in-spirits, Shawn Karr and Jeff Phillips.

Rest in peace, Michael. We will see you on the other side
