Obituary of George Thomas Huffman
George Thomas Huffman passed peacefully on September 11th, 2021, in his home in Silverton OR. At the age of 76.
George was born in Colorado Springs Colorado in 1945. After high school he went to People’s Bible College. In 1967 he signed up for the army and stationed in San Francisco, CA. It wasn’t long after his arrival in California before he was deployed to Vietnam for 3 years. While in Vietnam he delivered medical supplies and gained the rank of Sargent E5. He was awarded the Bronze Star for performing duties exceptionally.
George managed to see every state but, Maine. He drove some of the most difficult roads America and Canada have to offer, including the Ice Road. It was the Ice Road in Alaska where he was given the nickname Artic Handlebar, credit goes to his contest-winning mustache, which reached the length of sixteen inches from the middle of his nose to the tip of the twist.
In the late summer months, he could be seen on the I5 corridor, on his award winning 1987 Aspencade Gold Wing, somewhere between Washington and California, on his way to see his kids and spending time with his wife. Then when the leaves began to turn, he would be behind a steering wheel of an eighteen wheeler doing what he loved.
Once he retired, he kept his hands busy making lamps and canes out of Diamond Willow and spending time with his family.
He loved his God, his mother Eva Mae (Vernon), father Arnold Huffman his 8 siblings Sue Bruhn, John Huffman, Jim Huffman (Leslie), Paul Huffman (Ilene) Mary Patten (Jim), Pauline Peters (Ken), Ruth Peterson, Becky Penton (Joe), his six children, Faith Schaeffer, Meghan Huffman (Erik Austin), Matt Trettin, Stanley Huffman, Dan Huffman (Michelle), Justin Huffman (Nicole), ten grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, his wife Carolyn (Sanderson), 4 step-children, Melissa Sandlin (Cord), Victor Meinke (Gloria), Terra Lawless, Darren Meinke (Anita), 8 step-grandkids, 2 great step-grandkids with every part of his soul, and did what he could to provide and support them.
His family and friends will remember him by his unbeatable work ethic and his ultimate love of the open road.
