Lee was always full of joy and energy. I met him through my husband, Mark Cooper and saw him occasionally. Then at my work, I saw him in the elevator as he was doing some work for OSP. When Mark was in the hospital, I would let Lee know and he would always try to visit him when he could. Lee answered a lot of questions I had after Mark passed always concerned about how I was doing. I will miss his smile, his corny jokes and his quick efficient way of handling questions tossed at him. He made several "attempts" to get Mark to show up and join the square dancing! (Ha - too much exercise for Mark!) Another one of the good guys has gone from us. My condolences and thoughts are with his family.

LeRoy, as he was called in my family, was my cousin. He came every summer when we were little, to spend a couple weeks with our family and our Grandmother. I have so many stories of fun times we shared. My last interaction with LeRoy was last year during the wildfires that brought smoke to my neighborhood. Even though I knew he wasn't feeling well, he called to check on me. LeRoy, we love you and will miss your smile and laughter at our family gatherings!

I met Lee via working with him to bring two National Square Dance conventions to Portland. He was one of those rare individuals who drew people to him by sheer force of his amazing personality -- once you met and worked with Lee, you could not help but love him. He was honest to the bone, loved to laugh, and cared deeply about fairness and integrity. He could be tough when he needed to be (but never mean), and then he'd bring you a big box of his world-famous toffee candy. And if one ever wanted an example of commitment, all you needed to do was see him with Barbi - his love for her was ever obvious. Lee was never just an acquaintance -- when you were his friend, you got him 100%. He cared about you and he would do everything within his power to give you a hand when needed. I am so happy that Lee was a part of my life, and I will miss the big lug a lot. Dance on, Lee -- you made a difference in this world.

Lee was absolutely one of the "Good Guys". Like a lot of others, I had the opportunity to work with and around Lee at the MilDep. I don't care how deep in the quagmire I was, even a brief encounter with him in the halls would lift me out of my funk. I will forever remember his big smile and positive words.
Hopefully, a person will rise from the group and keep up the great work he did with the Retirees. Lee, you maybe gone, but you definitly will not be forgotten. RIP.

One of the things we learned in the Oregon National Guard was to take care of the troops. Lee was an example of that selfless service and always available to take care of soldiers. Even when he retired, he went out of his way to make sure the retirees had a forum to come together twice a year and share what was happening in the Guard and in our lives. You will be missed.

I was shocked when I heard that Lee had passed. I knew he was having some problems but didn't realize they were so severe. Lee was always there in my career and for years afterward. I first met Lee when a member of Troop E 82d Cav in Woodburn. Later when I worked for the Oregon Military Department Lee was always there whether it was a chance meeting in the hallway or when he came by to ask me a question. Thru all those years, Lee was always there, working in some capacity and always helpful. The one thing that never changed was his sense of humor and good mood. Even at 0600 in the morning when I went in early it always seemed I would run into Lee and he always had a smile and a happy greeting for me. During one of those meetings, Lee asked me why I was there so early and I said to him "for the same reason you are, so I can get something done before the troops arrive". He replied "do like I do, sleep in your office at night" and he laughed and walked away chuckling. The world and certainly the Oregon Guard is diminished by Lee's passing but he will always be remembered as a great Oregon Guardsman and a good friend. God bless him.
