Obituary of Dolores Jean Carney
Dolores Jean Carney passed away, June 5th, 2021 at the age of 91. Dolly was born in 1929 in Duluth, MN. She was the fifth and youngest child of Edward Carney and Lillian McGuire.
On May 7, 1955, she married Richard McDevitt and moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where they had the first four of their six children. In 1961, Dolly and Richard moved to Oregon, the birthplace of their last two children. They lived in Salem and Eugene, before settling in Portland in 1967.
In the early 70s, Dolly’s life changed from housewife and mother to working outside of the home. She got hired as the receptionist for the Inventory Control group of First National Bank. Dolly also took classes at PCC in typing, dictation, and general secretarial skills so she could advance at the bank. She moved downtown to the First National Bank tower as executive assistant to the Vice President of Bank Properties, where she worked until she retired.
She remarried in 1976 to another bank employee, Geogre Dickie. She took early retirement to spend more time with George, who retired three years prior to her. In retirement she and George enjoyed road trips across the US and being members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary where they taught boating safety courses to the general public and conducted boat safety inspections. Dolly also took up quilting. She would eventually teach general quilting classes and master classes in Celtic Interlace, a quilting design in which she excelled. Friends and family are the lucky recipients of her gifted hands.
Dolly was preceded in death by two of her sons, Kevin and Mark, and her husband George. She is survived by her son Timothy, daughters Susie, Patricia and Molly, as well as her grandchildren; Maxwell, Sydney, Hannah, Melodie, Rachel, Genevieve, Kaitlin, Nicole and Phillip, and seven great-grandchildren.
Dolly loved quilting, shopping, craft bazaars, farmers markets, reading, gardening, and wrangling her grandchildren during summer breaks. She is greatly missed.
A funeral Mass will be held at St. Agatha Church, 1430 SE Nehalem at 11:00 am July 24th, with a reception following at Immanuel Lutheran Fellowship Hall, 7810 SE 15th Ave. All are welcome, light refreshments will be provided.
