So sorry to hear of your loss to the family . I have such fond memories of meeting Bernie and Evelyn in Germany and staying in touch sporadically over the last 30+ Years. I learnt so much from you both and loved the British/American teasing. Jennifer

I'm so sorry for your loss boys. Bernie was such a kind man. He will be greatly missed. I was hoping to hear from him, saying he was making another trip down here to California to visit family. He loved his family and friends. I remember Bernie and Lynn saying let's go to Leavenworth to kick off the Christmas season. It was so much fun. Yes, Bernie, I'll have a glass of ice wine for both of you. Visiting with Bernie and Lynn was always so relaxing and enjoyable. People that make you feel comfortable and relaxed to be yourself around are a rare find. Their faith carried them with grace and dignity, Bernie's dedication to God showed and I saw it as a breath of fresh air in a stale world. He had seen so much of the world, so much history to share for those willing to listen. He has gone to be with Lynn and meet the Lord our God. What a great conversation to be had. See you on the other side Bernie. May you rest in peace. We will miss you.

Bernie always seemed to be a happy guy. He loved people and he loved life. I had numerous conversations with Bernie when our kids were teens in Germany. We often talked about spiritual things. He was always one to point out that actions that follow Jesus' teachings were important. He encouraged me because I thought I was weak in that area. His life still speaks to many of us!
I'm thankful I can call him a "family member!”

Bernie was one of the nicest guys I ever met. He and his late wife Evelyn visited us here in Arizona several years ago. It was so good to see him again after all the years we worked together in Germany and the US. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. My condolences to the family.

I would like to relate an experience that shows the kind of man that Bernie was. My wife and I lived in Pacific Beach WA where we met him and soon became close friends. One morning in the Spring of 2016 found us standing in the field adjacent to the 2 story shop building that had been converted into apartments where we lived, watching the apartment above ours burn as our belongings were being ruined by smoke and water damage. After calling and texting family, our next message went to Bernie. Soon he arrived and walked up behind us. No one said anything as he shared our shock and distress. Finally, it was Bernie that broke the silence by saying "You're coming home with me."

My sister Sue used to live in Pacific Beach before she died. Bernie and Evelyn always went out of their way to help sue anyway they could no questions asked. I met Bernie & Evelyn one time when I went to visit my sister. I fell in love with them in their home immediately. When I found out that Bernie was enough home in Salem Oregon I was sad that he had to leave the home he loved but was glad he was close by and I had planned to go see him in Salem. I asked him to please let me know when he was wanting visitors. He never let me know. I regret not being able to give him a big hug and thank him for everything that they did for my sister and to say goodbye.
