Jim wasn’t my dad, but he was most definitely my “other dad”! I went from being “the neighbor girl up the street” to being part of the Fairbanks clan for most all my teenage years and beyond. I moved in the house up the street in 1989. I was 12 at the time. I became friends with Jodi pretty quickly after moving in. My dad worked several jobs at the time and I found myself spending a lot of time down at the Fairbanks’ house. Anyone who knows Jim knows that he is an awesome cook! When Jim would cook dinner and I was down at their house, he’d say “Lindsay, get on over there and grab yourself a plate!” I was a bit timid at first, but after several times of this same scenario I soon didn’t even ask, I just went and grabbed a plate. I was now a part of the fold. They welcomed me in with open arms and it has never changed. I have so many fond memories of Jim. Family camping trips to Frog Lake where we would go “toadin” and catch tons of toads and load them up in the water cooler. The adrenaline rush when Jim’s scanner would alert him of a pursuit and he’d load anyone who wanted to come into his white van and we’d go “cop chasin’” and he would do his part in helping to fight crime. Jim kept our neighborhood so safe. I never had to worry up the street just knowing Jim was around! And the many many times he helped me with my car drama!! I’ll never forget the time in my early 20s when my car died on me and left me stranded on the side of the road. I called Jim and he towed my car to his house and then took me to work. When I called him after work and school, I’ll never forget the smirk in his voice when he said “Well, Lindsay… if you’d put GAS in your car before it runs out you wouldn’t be stranded on the side of the road like you were!” I told him that my gas light never came on to alert me that I was almost empty. OH, he had a hay day with that one! Those are called IDIOT LIGHTS, Lindsay!! When your tank is down to a 1/4 tank you fill it! There were many many times after that where I needed car assistance and Jim was ALWAYS willing to help. Always. Even into my adult years I would always drop in now and again to say hi, and Jim would always scold me if it had been too long! I visited more often during the time he took care of his dear Louann. He took SUCH good care of her. His love for her was immeasurable. Never will a Father’s Day or your April birthday go by where I don’t think of you, Jim! You were an amazing father, grandfather, and friend. I miss and love you, Jim ♥️ And all my love to each of you: Jodi, Matt, Chad, Dwayne and all the rest of the family ♥️
