Lighting a candle for Uncle Bob. He was the first optometrist that "gave me sight". My first pair of glasses from Uncle Bob. I had never seen leaves on trees or numbers on license plates. He opened up the wonderful world to me! For that I am grateful. He was always there for everyone. I hope he is enjoying afterlife with his Joanne! Missing them both!

I worked for Dr. Pinder my senior year of high school. He had a small office in St. John’s and I showed up every afternoon to answer phones, send out invoices and tidy the office. My first day he took me out to lunch at a fancy restaurant and we talked about school, family and my future plans.
Dr. Pinder loved his family. He proudly displayed a framed picture of his children in the reception area for all to see. He had a great sense of humor, loved to tease me (constantly), had a mischievous smile and twinkle to his eyes. He enjoyed his crossword puzzles and I often found him relaxed in the exam chair with a folded paper on a clipboard. He could make a mess with paper and lenses and frames. He loved to tell stories and would become animated when talking about family, friends, college and his time in the service. Because I was young and not yet worldly, he didn’t hesitate to share his pearls of wisdom with me.
After I moved on to marriage and children and school and life in general, I would still stop by his office in St. John’s for a quick visit or maybe a lunch date for more teasing and pearls. He remains one of the special people in my life that left an impact on my journey.
Condolences and peace.

I moved into NE Portland in 1971 and lived in the house right behind Dr. Pinder and his family. What a hoot that was! There was always something going on, often in their backyard as you might imagine with that group of kids. I could hear Joanne giving piano lessons and strong directions to her own kids.
Dr. Pinder always was the voice of reason. He became not just my neighbor, but also my optometrist. He taught me the term pinguencula. I taught Martin and Mary Beth while they were students at St. Rose. He always came to parent conferences and was so supportive of the school and staff. I remember once his conversation with Martin about their white dog Sheba(?) who they maintained to my son was not a dog, but an aardvark! Wonderful man, patriarch of a wonderful family!!

Bob was born in Meridian, Idaho on February 24th, 1930. Our mother said that if he was born on February 22nd, Washington’s Birthday, his name would have been “George”. We went to the County school where he played football and he learned to play baseball with the Law brothers. Vern Law went on to become a major league pitcher with the Pittsburg Pirates.
We moved to Boise and his teen years are where he grew his love of sports and lifelong friendships with Jack Beach, Rod Grider, Buzz Harrington, Rich Gorden and Bill Butler. He kept in touch with them through the years and into retirement. He was an “A” student in High School and would invite them to the house for homework. Bob did the homework while they sang and played the piano. Bob was quite a dancer too. Our usual Saturday mornings would have our older sister Dottie playing the piano while Bob and I danced around the house.
He had more schooling than anyone I know. He originally wanted to be a Dentist while working after school putting dental chairs in Dental offices and had started to study Dentistry. That later changed to Optometry and another 4 years of school. He helped all of us see the world better.
He called me when we lived in Michigan to let me know that he had found Joanne and that she was the love of his life. He was wondering if he should get married while he was still in the service or wait until he got discharged. After I told him he would get more money being married in the service they were married soon after that!
Bob and Joanne helped us find our home in Northeast Portland when we moved back to Oregon in 1961. We lived close to them and our children grew up and went to St. Rose and Central Catholic together. While we were growing up Bob said that he wanted to have his own basketball team and he got them! Those years created many family memories for us all and Bob started many traditions that still go on today.
As Bob and I became seniors our lives became a lot quieter. We’d meet for lunch at Glendoveer to talk and a couple of times he even put up with me when we played golf together!
Life with Bob has been a great Novel and I have enjoyed being a part of it. Thank you, Bob!

Bob was one of those rare people who always could be counted on…for anything, no questions asked. Growing up, he would challenge us to be better and was also one of the kindest human beings I have known. His quick wit, sharp mind, warm heart and dedication to family will always provide incredible memories that will be there to remember him by.
