Obituary of Evelyn Jean Miller
Evelyn J. Miller: August 25, 1926 - January 1, 2021
Evelyn Jean Jacobs Miller, of Salem, OR., formerly of Palatine (and then Crystal Lake), IL., loving mother and grandmother, died peacefully at the age of ninety-four, on January 1, 2021. She is preceded in death by her husband, Carroll K. Miller, and her sons, Kenneth Miller, and her son, Dwight, whom she lost shortly after his birth.
Evelyn’s children, Carolyn Garriott (Jerry Garriott) and Ken Miller (Pam McLean Miller), and her granddaughter Dominique Miller meant the world to her. Evelyn moved from Crystal Lake, Il. to Salem, OR. in 2017, to live with her daughter Carolyn, and son-in-law Jerry after having lived on her own most of her life. Despite her enjoyment of living alone, she thoroughly enjoyed living with her daughter and son-in-law, traveling with them to Hawaii, Arizona, Chicago, and enjoying her later years, surrounded by loving family.
Evelyn was a hard worker, having worked at the Palatine, Il. post office for much of her later life. Supporting her family meant everything to her, and she thoroughly enjoyed her job. Evelyn enjoyed horseback riding, reading, and was an avid, long time season ticket-holding Cubs fan, who was overjoyed when the Cubs won the World Series for the first time in over one hundred years, in 2016.
Evelyn was born in Maywood, Il. to Elizabeth and William Jacobs. Evelyn grew up riding horses with her older sister, Florence. She married Carroll K. Miller on September 18, 1946. Her first son, Kenneth, was born on November 6, 1947. Her daughter, Carolyn, was born on May 2, 1949. Evelyn’s granddaughter, Dominique, was born on September 6, 1982.
Evelyn enjoyed spending time with her family, and at Cubs games, after her retirement from the post office, in 1989, often making a day of Cubs games, and enjoying a coffee along the way. These were the days she treasured, often going with her son, daughter, son-in-law, or granddaughter, who are all avowed Cubs fans, having learned well from Evelyn.
Evelyn was a loving, patient, principled, kind, and self-sufficient woman, who will be truly missed by all who knew her, most of all, her daughter Carolyn and son-in-law Jerry, and her granddaughter Dominique and daughter-in-law, Pam.
