Obituary of Michael James Novak
Novak, Mike ‘Johnny Popper’ J., 74, of Portland, Oregon died on December 25, 2020.
Mike was born on August 2, 1946, to Laura and James Novak, in Portland. After graduating from Franklin High School in 1964, he began attending Portland State University. He was drafted into the Army in 1966. He served in Vietnam transporting fuel to the frontlines for the helicopters. Upon returning to Portland in 1968 he began building homes and expanded into remodeling and fire damage.
In 1968 Mike met Janice Price and they were married in November 1968, going on to have two boys, Jason and Craig. They were married for 52 years.
After retiring he had his own auto body shop. He enjoyed time in La Pine, Oregon building a second home for the family. Riding motorcycles was a beloved pastime for him. He was a member of the In Country Vietnam Motorcycle Club, where he shared camaraderie with other Vietnam veterans and strived to help other vets. He was fondly referred to as “Johnny Popper” by his friends.
Mike was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his wife Janice, sons Jason and Craig, brother Gordon, and his granddaughter Madalyn.
A memorial will be held in Portland, however, due to COVID-19 a date has not been scheduled yet. Mike's wishes were to have his ashles placed in La Pine, Oregon and his family and friends will honor that wish this summer.
