Obituary of Alan Howell

Alan Howell, lifelong Oregonian and resident of Tigard, Oregon, sadly passed away unexpectedly following a cardiac event on the afternoon of Dec. 30, 2020. Alan was born March 12, 1949 to Walter ‘Wayne’ and Greta Howell. He graduated from Franklin High School in 1967 and shortly after was drafted by the U.S. Army. He served in the Vietnam War from May 1968 to March 1970, surviving multiple injuries and honorably earned two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star for heroism in battle. Upon his return to Portland, he met and married the love of his life, Kathy White, Feb. 22, 1971. Alan was a hardworking, devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend. He built a successful construction business, was an avid fisherman, outdoorsman, skilled craftsman, and had many hobbies, including photography and coffee. Together, Alan and Kathy traveled to many places around the world including countless trips to Mexico, Hawaii, Alaska, and tours to Panama, Costa Rica, Belize, Peru, Ireland, The United Kingdom and most recently Vietnam. Alan is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Kathleen; children, Jason (Katie) and Jennifer Tyler (Matt); grandchildren, Nathan, Aidan, Ryan and Lila Howell and James, Austin and Isla Tyler; sister, Janet Laughlin; stepmother, Betty Howell; and stepsisters, Kathy Etchemendy and Barbara Fiske. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Sally Tetzlaff. He will be deeply missed and remembered for the life he provided for his loving family and the joy he found in simple things. A military committal service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 15, 2021, at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
