Obituary of Mary Ann Rudd
Mary Ann (Marshall) Rudd, Tigard, Oregon died Sunday, November 8, 2020 at the age of 78 of complications related to long term health conditions. Mary Ann was preceded in death by her mother, Myrtle Ann Marshall (1991) and father, Omar Grafton Marshall (1966). She was also proceeded in death by several special people including her second husband, Barry Rudd and dear friend LeRoy Anderson. She is survived by three daughters Sally McGuire, Sheila Anderson (Richard) and Shannon Roarke (Mike.) Additionally, she leaves behind seven loving grandchildren -- Marshall, Gavin and Elsa McGuire; Jack, Erin and Richard Anderson; and Ryan Roarke -- who lost their beloved G-Ma, Gran-Gran, Gramma.
Mary Ann was born in Oregon City, Oregon January 27, 1942 the only child of Myrtle and Omar. She attended Canby schools where she excelled in academics and athletics. She was a scholar athlete and a doubles tennis champion. After high school, Mary Ann attended Emmanuel School of Nursing where she met many of her lifelong friends who shared her passion for nursing and caring for others. After first working at Doernbecher’s Children’s hospital, she found her career-long home at Willamette Falls Hospital (now Providence Willamette Falls Medical Center.) There she met numerous friends who she regularly gathered with enjoying beach trips, “the old nurses’ lunches” and holiday gatherings.
Mary Ann was very enthusiastic about sport. She encouraged her girls and later the grandkids to play and compete. She has been on the sidelines for countless football, softball, tennis, volleyball, soccer, horseback riding, lacrosse, basketball, swimming and track events. She loved watching Oregon Ducks Football, faithfully following pro-Ducks into their NFL careers, always had a kind word for the Beavers and even fell in love with Boise State because it was her dear neighbor’s team.
As her health declined and COVID prevented gatherings with friends, she stayed sharp with cross words, the word jumbo and of course, watching Jeopardy, delighting when she correctly answered the final question. Alex Trebek passed on the same day. Coincidence?
Mary Ann had quick wit, soothing advice, level-headedness and a caregiver spirit. She could almost never say no to her daughter’s pleas to bring home just one more pet. During our childhood, we had ducks, horses, dogs, birds, rabbits, fish and even a Thanksgiving Turkey. Extra kids were always welcome in our house because she loved the crazy banter of a full house. She took care of her neighbors, friends, her friends’ parents and her friends’ friends. She volunteered for various organizations including the Canby Thrift Store, The Clackamas County Juvenile Diversion Program, and leveraged her extensive nursing experience to support Hospice patients. She loved all the special dogs she had throughout her life and of late, the wild birds in her back yard. She kept numerous bird feeders and enjoyed watching them scurry about in busy patterns.
Arrangements are being handled by Crown Memorial. A service will hopefully be held in December when we can find a place that can accommodate COVID realities. Donations can made to the American Legion Post 122 Scholarship Fund at PO Box 52, Canby, Oregon 97035 in memory of Mary Ann Rudd. She was a long-time member and volunteer at the Legion and enjoyed the camaraderie of friends and robust pinochle matches.
Mary Ann was loved by many. We miss her so much already.
