Darrell passed away on September18, 2020. He married his beloved wife, Doris, on January 31, 1953. Doris passed away on September 27, 2015. Darrell was born in Missouri Valley, Iowa. He leaves behind his daughter, Renee Whittington, son-in-law, Mark Whittington, and 5 sisters. Darrell had one brother who is deceased.
He had a great sense of humor. One of the things we remember most is his story of how he met Doris. They met at Bank of America in Huntington Park, California where they both worked. Darrell would say Doris would come to his desk to borrow a pencil. Doris would laugh and always said that was not true.
Darrell loved the United States of America and enlisted in the Marines at age 16. He would send money to his mother in Iowa to help her and his siblings financially. He was in the Marines for 4 years then enlisted in the Army. He was in CID School in Japan and in the Korean War in 1950. Darrell was wounded in the Korean war at age 21 and received 3 Bronze Stars and Good Conduct Medal.
Darrell loved getting Doris her breakfast every morning. He would have a bowl of cereal or oatmeal, toast and would cut up fruit for her. He loved fishing and always waited for the big one. Even if he didn't catch anything he loved the quiet time. Darrell loved growing tomatoes everything from cherry tomatoes to beefsteak tomatoes. He loved writing Rants which were published in The Statesman's Journal in Salem, Oregon.
