Obituary of Philip Michael Hurley

Philip Michael Hurley died peacefully in Tualatin, Oregon on June 30, 2020. Born February 5, 1939, in Kansas City, MO, he graduated from Richland High School (WA) and University of Portland (OR). He later earned his master’s degree from Southern Oregon College. He worked at Grants Pass High School from 1964 to 1996, where he not only taught thousands of students and earned multiple teaching awards. He also served as the head of the Humanities Department, the ski team coach in the earlier years, and the Voice of the Caveman for decades, while also being active in many civic activities, including local theater and the Community Concert programs. He was recognized for his friendliness and listening skills that helped many.  He loved and supported all the sports programs at GPHS. Additionally he taught many night classes at RCC.  He was also active in St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Grants Pass, OR and involved in the local Coast Guard Auxiliary.

After his retirement, he and his wife (Justina Hurley) moved to Waldport, OR, where they traveled the world, regularly played golf, and thoroughly enjoyed life. Phil also  volunteered at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport, OR, for eleven years and served as Crew Captain with Norm and totally enjoyed the Thursday afternoon crew. He also volunteered for the  “Whale Watching Spoken Here” program.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Phil and Helen Hurley, and his youngest brother, Jerry Hurley. He is survived by his wife, Justina Hurley; his sister, Mary Jo Hurley; his brother and sister-in-law, Dan and Tracy Hurley; his children (The Three N’s) in order of birth: Noelle, Nicholas, & Noah Hurley; his daughter-in-law, Holly Hurley; and his favorite grandchild, Eloise.

He will be buried at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Portland, OR. May he rest in peace.
