One thing I know is I feel very lucky to be her granddaughter. I was always fascinated with the intricacies of Grandma and her sickness. She seemed so capable and intelligent to me, but most of all loving. Being the youngest I always felt like I didn’t have many people to talk to growing up, but I could always talk to her. One of my most favorite memories was when you talked with her and picked up on something she was saying. If you understood and validated back to her you knew what she meant her face would light up with a smile and laugh. She really did understand so much around her. Most recently about a year ago I was visiting her at her home during a lunch break and had met my mom there. I was having a particularly bad day in my new job and was telling my mom about it. During my story I happened to look over at Grandma and was blown away. She looked genuinely concerned and was listening to me. I burst into tears because I knew she was, and I could feel how much she cared for me. She was a grandma that was concerned for her granddaughter. Even with her being sick I never felt like she didn’t know me, because she did. Even with her sickness, that didn’t matter. To me, she has shown me so much care, acceptance, and love.
I was lucky to spend a lot of time with Grandpa and Grandma and to this day they are my most favorite memories. I used to sleep over at his duplex and they would be up early making coffee and cereal with banana slices. Something I’d love to hear is those two shuffling around in the early morning starting the day. It was too early for grandkids to be awake. Grandma would be walking around and soon you could hear she was in the room. Then you’d hear Grandpa come down the hall and the floor would creak. Grandpa would quietly say “Joann, Joann” trying to quietly get her out of the room. There was always something very comforting about this. Felt like she was checking on you.
Grandma loved Grandpa and he loved her. This was obvious to everyone. This kind of love is rare and remarkable. "The Notebook" had nothing on them. I will forever feel fortunate to have true love modeled in front of me. And I will forever be fortunate to have had a Grandma like mine.

Dearest Aunt Joann - I wish you a safe journey! Please give my Dad, Grandma and Grandpa and all your other brothers and sisters a big hug for me. And also Uncle Don for taking such amazing care of you all those years. What a grand reunion it will be! I loved seeing all your pictures - you were beautiful all the way up until the day you left us. You are an angel now! How cool is that!

We love every memory of your dear Mother. She was such a special person - it was always so wonderful to attend Mass at St. Peter the Fisherman in Arch Cape with family, and see how at home she was in church, together with family. We love you kids - and your kids and grandchildren! The family love you share is the rich legacy of each of your parents. You are blessed indeed, and we are blessed to be in your circle.

The care which your father, Don, initiated on behalf of your mother, Joann, was an invaluable gift. Her life guided his enduring affection and perpetuated an agenda of care which served her well. From the sidelines it was obvious that you “kids” carried forward that same affection and agenda. Joann was well loved and wonderfully provided for by your entire family.
And more, the Cahill Trust not only provided for your mother, it continues to provide residence for those of us lucky enough to find a vacancy on your property. THANK YOU for modeling such care of your mother and for providing such an attractive place for us to call home. We have found such to be more of a sanctuary than just an address.
Acclimation of your mother’s death will take time. Perhaps the rich heritage of her faith will be solace in this new journey each of you are on.
May she rest in PEACE ... and may you be richly blessed for the journey ahead.

It was her smile, her wit and the depth of her unconditional love... through camping trips on the Trask River, puffy skirts & square dancing, clamming & cook outs, card parties and overnights in the bunk beds -- of which the "laundry chute" is a particularly fond memory. We are with you in spirit and send tight hugs.
Much love,
Deb & Bill Simmons

I grew up living next door to the Cahills. I spent a lot of time at their house. Everyone was very kind to me. Jan was my best friend. I have lots of great memories of both Don and Joann. I remember walking in the back door and it seemed Joann was always in the kitchen. The kitchen always smelled so good. She would be leanining back against the counter, her arms folded, holding her ever present cup of coffee, and smiling. She had the best laugh. It was more of a giggle, and she did love to laugh. My thoughts and prayers are with the Cahill family and friends

Joanne was my favorite aunt! I used to spend time every summer with the Cahill’s in Portland and at Cannon Beach where the original beach cabin was. Aunt Joanne would take me as she ran errands around Portland and would ask me-“ do you know where we are? How would we get back home from here?” Teaching awareness of surroundings in the city- I was the country bumpkin cousin! She taught me how to make strawberry freezer jam when the strawberries came on. I still have a Rosery she made for me- we would pray the rosary on the trip up to Grandmas in Centralia- I would be stuck sitting in the middle up front- we called it the death seat because there was no seat belt!!
Mike, Pat, Donny and Jan- I love all you guys- I’m happy tip think of your parents together playing cards in heaven with all the Walsh brothers and sisters, Grandma and Grandpa with sweet wonderful cooking aromas coming from grandmas kitchen!!
