Obituary of Halver Leo Swindell

Halver Leo Swindell, 85, passed away on January 5, 2010 in Portland, Oregon. Halver, better known to friends and family as Pappy, was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on May 6, 1924. Pappy grew up in an orphanage until he turned 17. Once he turned seventeen he joined the US military. Pappy proudly served his country in the US Navy for more than 20 years, which included serving in 3 wars; WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. While serving his country he served on 14 different ship which include; the USS Lapon, USS Euryale, USS Bashaw, USS Fulton, USS Griffin, USS Midway, USS Corporal, USS Sablefish, USS Trutta, USS Coro, USS Bugara, USS Menhaden, USS Bream, and the USS Greenfish. Pappy married Beverly Colfax in 1967 and was married for 25 years and raised 3 children. Pappy loved the ladies and in his spare time he was an avid gardener, enjoyed leather work, and loved to feed his grandchildren pancakes for every meal. Pappy is survived by his ex-wife Beverly Colfax; daughters, Sheila Webb and Penny Mirich; son, Mark-one Swindell, granddaughters, Karen Wirkkala, LuAnne Bonich, Michelle Thompson, Tasha Mirich, Kelsea Perry, and Tara Perry; and grandson Kyle Mirich, and 6 great grandchildren.
