Obituary of Frank Julius Roll

Frank Julius Roll, 85, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 22, 2012 at his home in Woodburn, OR where he lived for the past ten years. Dubbed “Butch” as a youth, he was born March 31, 1927 in Chicago, IL, the 15th of 16 children. Frank's early life was spent working with his brothers in the family roofing business. He served two terms in the military, stationed in Korea during WWII with the army-air corps. Following an honorable discharge he married the love of his life, Mary. They relocated to Southern California in 1955, where he continued as a roofer for some years. Later he began a career in landscaping until his retirement in 1986. Frank and Mary also established and operated Maranatha Bird Farm as a profitable hobby/business. After 54 years of marriage, Mary passed away in 2001. Frank then moved to Oregon, and he and his daughter (who established Tin Man Garden Art) enjoyed many successful years as local artists, and he became known as the Tin Man. He was also active with the Rose City Clowns as Sparky the clown. Frank's love of practical jokes and entertaining made him widely known and a favorite with many in the Portland area. He is survived by four children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
