Mrs. Stalker was my English teacher, at LaSalle High School in Milwaukie Oregon. I remember that she had a guest folk singer perform for us (she sang, "Suzanne," by Leonard Cohen). I remember thinking that this was such an innovative thing for an English teacher to do. We learned how poetry is an integral part of music.

For three years Mrs. Stalker and I only knew each other from my daily lunchtime detention duties. She had to oversee my work. We had a strong mutual antagonism. As senior year approached though, I realized she taught the only classes in the entire school catalog that I really had a desire to take, Creative Writing and Poetry. She didn't want to have me in her classes though, and I understood why. I had been nothing but a pain in her side for three years. I had to beg her to let me enroll in her classes that year. If I could get three teachers to vouch for my character, she would allow it. It was a struggle, but I got it done. I think also Christie Wright put in a good word for me and that had some sway. She was doubtful of me at first, but as the writing class progressed, I found myself striving for the first time to do my best in school, not just get by, and that hostility between us vanished. I earned the only two A's in high school that I can recall, and truly came to respect her. LaSalle had a lot of teachers of good caliber, but Mrs. Stalker was the only one who really made me find out what I could do.

You were a demanding teacher because you never let anyone get away with doing less than their best. Thank you for expecting more from me.

I have wonderful memories of Mrs. Stalker at LaSalle High School. She taught English and my cousin and I were in the same class.

Hope was not only a very brave individual, she had the guts to share with me her own story of depression and fear. She was my friend as well as my teacher. Her life was amazing in it's polarities; she shared the most beautiful things of this world with her students while fighting personal battles of extraordinary pain, And she didn't say poor me. The things she shared with me were to let me know that I could overcome my mountains too. A lovely amazing person.
