Obituary of Mary Suzanne Wines
Mary (Sis) Suzanne Wines
November 8, 1938 -November 27, 2020
Mary Suzanne Olson was born on November 8th, 1938. She was the second child of four born to Roy and Mayme Olson. Mary had three brothers: an older brother named Norman and two younger brothers-Oliver and John. Since she was the only girl in the family her nickname, Sis, stuck with her throughout life. Mary was raised in a home off of the Trask River on Elm Street in Tillamook, Oregon. Her dad, Roy, was a milkman for the Tillamook Cheese Factory. Her mom, Mayme, was a homemaker. The family lived there for many years and Mary graduated from Tillamook High School in 1956.
After high school, Mary moved to Portland with her best friends Natalie and Joanie. This is where the great adventure began. They shared many fun times together and developed a friendship that lasted their entire lives.
In time, Mary moved to Seattle where she became a telephone operator. This is where she met her first husband, Bill Waltz. She and Bill had a child. Kimberly Suzanne was born in Seattle. This relationship did not endure and she rekindled a romance with Charles (Chuck) Saemann.
Chuck and Mary moved back to Portland to raise Kim and start a family. They were married and shortly after, Kellie was born. Chuck’s family was from Sheboygan, Wisconsin, so eventually, they moved back to Wisconsin, which was challenging for Mary (Sis) since her parents and brothers remained in Oregon. In Wisconsin, Mary was a stay-at-home mother and had three more children, Kacie, John, and Jeff. They lived in Milwaukee for about 12 years. Since Chuck’s mom had passed, Mary and Chuck decided to move back to Oregon to be closer to Mary’s family.
In 1976 they moved to Portland. Mary had recently got a retail job in Milwaukee and was able to transfer to Portland. After working retail for many years, she was able to begin doing handcrafted advertisements which pulled from Mary’s creative side. She loved drawing pictures for the ads that were to be published in the local newspapers. For several years Mary, Chuck, and the five children were happy in Portland. After a few years, Mary and Chuck divorced but remained friends until Chuck passed in 2017.
Mary met and married Myrel in 1990. They lived in Portland but eventually moved to Battleground, Washington upon retirement. Mary and Myrel were very happy living in Battleground, but unfortunately, shortly after moving to Battleground, Myrel passed away unexpectedly. Mary lived in Battleground until 2011 with Kacie. Mary began showing signs of Alzheimer’s in 2011. She lived with her family until 2017. At that time Mary moved to Melody Care Memory Center. Over the years the staff and Lourdes, the owner, took exceptional care of Mary. Mary thought of Lourdes as family.
Mary is survived by her children: Kimberly Virtue and husband Peter, Kellie Burkhardt, and husband Dan, Kacie Saemann, John Saemann, and Jeff Saemann. She is also survived by her step-children: Myrel Wines Jr. and wife Melanie, Kim Knipe and husband Scott, and Troy Wines and wife Kristi. Mary had several Grandchildren: Stephanie, Wesley, Jonathan, Christopher, Seth, Laura, Minnie, Madison, Brandon, Breanne, Rachel, Allison, Caleb, Nick, and Mike. Mary also has 14 great-grandchildren. Mary has two surviving brothers Norman Olson and wife Beverly, John Olson, and wife Mary. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Myrel Wines; parents Roy and Mayme Olson; her brother Oliver Olson and step-daughter, Heather Wines
Mary was loved by all that knew her. She will always be remembered for her vivacious personality and love for life! Mary had a kind heart but was also known to say things as she saw them. Mary loved to laugh and had a good sense of humor. A Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held at Abundant Life Church on June 30th, 2021 (time TBD), in Happy Valley Oregon. Mary will be buried with Myrel at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon.
