This is Virgina Keeler, aged 103. She passed away peacefully this week in Portland, Oregon. Virginia was my mother’s cousin. (My mother is 102). Virginia and my mother kept up their longtime relationship as cousins over these many years.
Virginia was married at the time of World War 11. During the war she received money from the military for herself and her husband. Virginia saved every penny of the money that would have gone to her husband and upon his return from the war, gave it to him. She then divorced him.
Virginia was gay, at a time when coming out would have been very difficult. She went on to live, and have a very long and flourishing relationship into old age, with a woman.
Those were different times. We honor Virginia and her choices in life, which must have been particularly challenging to navigate in those times.
My mother said “Virginia had a great sense of humor, was always so forthright and fair in life.” We want to share her story of courage and endurance. We will miss you Virginia!

Aunt Ginny was an amazing woman who loved life and those around her. She inspired me. She was gentle and kind. I have so many wonderful memories of her. She used to tell me stories of growing up, about war time and traveling. She always had a quick smile and a loving laugh. She will be missed.

"She was loved...she was such a important person in our lives and they will never be the same. She loved her nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. She made things happen. She was our Aunt Ginny...ours...loved for her stories, loved for love for sports, loved for her love of clams and all things seafood, loved for her long walks and slow talks. She gave the best hugs and light kisses on your cheeks. I will never forget when she met Dominic and Anna for the first time. She just held them and kissed their heads and didn’t want to ever let go. She would snuggle her nose into their necks and take in their baby scent. Later on as the kids grew we could always find them at Aunt Ginnys cabin if they had been out in OP for to long. She was so amazing. She is so missed. Most of all she will forever be loved. She was an amazing woman who lived an amazing and loving life."
